Steel Panther + The Wild! @ The Commodore Ballroom – January 20th 2017

American comedy rock, glam gods, Steel Panther, brought their tour through Vancouver over the weekend for back to back shows at the famous Commodore Ballroom.

The night started off with an explosive performance from Kelowna-native rockers The Wild! The band worked around the stage like ball lighting, every one of their aggressive action was completely captivating. Their music was crunchy and raw and overflowed with diesel-veined kick-assery. It’s nice to see local boys stirring shit up and delivering solid music and solid live shows.

After a quick break between acts, it was time for the headliners.

The four-piece strolled onto the stage as the audience roared to life with eager cheers.

Michael Starr, the lead singer, took center stage with Satchel, lead guitarist, and Lexxi Foxx, bassist, at his sides and Stix Zadinia, drummer, at his rear. The quadruple rolled into the night with Eyes of a Panther from the bands 2009 release, “Feel The Steel”. The crowd joined in singing along from the first lyric. The overpowering addition of the audiences backing vocals soon drained out the main audio, especially during the chorus. All you could hear was “She’s got the eyes of a panther” being screamed from every direction.

The band is not only able to stir up their fans with their throwback satirical tunes, they also do a phenomenal job of staying in character and hamming up their personas. Starr and Satchel are the sexually adventurous, drug-fueled maniacs that lead every eighties glam band. Foxx is the self-centered, narcissist that is oblivious of anything outside of himself. Stix is the typical dumb drummer that seems to be just along for the ride but probably is the mastermind of everything.

The show was equal amounts musical performance as it is performance art. You are essentially seeing a Tony & Tina’s Wedding type situation where the audience is attending a live play about a glam band. It is really quite brilliant and perfectly executed.

It is also really important to point out the number of people that attend these shows to explore their wild side. From a constant barrage of women flashing their breasts to the crowd to an intense amount of binge drinking, a Steel Panther show is something truly special.

The most memorable moment of the night was when the band brought approximately seventeen women on stage while the performed “17 Girls In A Row”. The stage became a showcase for attempts at sexy dancing by a group of women that were equal number open exhibitionists and cautiously curious. The raucous encouragement from the audience was, unfortunately, an equal amount laughing with and laughing at the on-stage antics but, in the end, it was all in good fun.

Steel Panther have been able to find this wonderful niche market, one that sees them unrivaled and standing alone. They are epic and over the top but at the same time they are complete geniuses.

Thank you to both bands for the amazing night out.

Until next time.
